Thomas Hong

Orchestra

 

    THOMAS HONG was born in In chun, Korea. In 1978, his family immigrated to the United States and made their residence in Philadelphia. He began his musical training at the age of 15 on the piano and continued his musical studies at Philadelphia Biblical University, studying with Dr. Samuel Hsu. Later, he went on to earn a master degree in choral conducting at Temple University and an artist diploma in orchestral conducting from The Curtis Institute of Music where he studied with Otto-Werner Mueller.

    Presently, Mr. Hong is co-conductor of the Campanile Orchestra at Rice University. For the past four years, he was Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Haverford College, where he
conducted the orchestra and other ensembles. Other previous appointments include music director of Delaware County Youth Orchestra and assistant conductor of The Curtis Opera Theatre as well as First Korean Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, where he served as organist and choir director for many years.

    Professional orchestras that Mr. Hong has conducted in the past include Orchestre National de France, Fort Worth Symphony, Winnepeg Symphony Orchestra, Wroclaw Philharmonic (European debut), Spokane Symphony (U.S. debut) and Orchestra Society of Philadelphia, where he is a frequent guest conductor. In September of 2007, he will begin a new position with Orchestre National de France as one of their assistant conductors, accompanying Maestro Kurt Masur on a European tour. Mr. Hong was also concurrently appointed assistant conductor of Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, where he will be in charge of conducting all the educational programs as well as covering for the subscription concerts. This position will begin in September of 2008. In addition, Mr. Hong is pursuing conducting studies with Maestro Larry Rachleff at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.
