Barbara Hull is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, where she studies with James Thompson and serves as Assistant Conductor of the Eastman Brass Guild. Barbara also received her Master’s Degree in Trumpet Performance from Eastman, and won the school’s Performer’s Certificate while studying with Charles Geyer. She was also winner of Eastman's Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Concerto Competition and performed as soloist with the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Donald Hunsberger. She is a graduate of Houghton College, where she earned the B.Mus. degree and studied with Harold McNiel. Other instructors include Mark Gould, Robert Earley, Paul Merkelo, James F. Burke, and David Kuehn. She has performed with Robert Nagel and participated in master classes with Barbara Butler and Vincent Cichowicz.
Barbara was Principal Trumpet with the Albany Symphony Orchestra from 1995-1998 and made recordings with the orchestra under the Decca and Albany Records labels. She played with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra from 2000-2003. While living in Albuquerque, she also performed regularly with the New Mexico Brass Quintet, the New Mexico Symphony Brass Quintet, the Chamber Orchestra of Albuquerque, and Opera Southwest. The Hulls relocated to Rochester, NY in 2004, where Barbara is a freelance trumpeter. She currently performs with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Syracuse and Harrisburg Symphony Orchestras, the Rochester Chamber Orchestra, the Rochester Oratorio Society, and the Skaneateles Summer Music Festival. Barbara also recently served as principal trumpet of the Eastman Wind Ensemble during a recording project with the Canadian Brass; a CD is scheduled for release at the end of 2008.
