Musical Instruction
Picture Slideshow

Campers at Csehy receive musical instruction in the form of private lessons, classes in music theory, and participation in large ensembles.

Private Lessons

All campers receive two half-hour private lessons per week for their major instrument (or voice). In order to prepare for these lessons, high school campers (grades 9-12) practice two hours per day on their major instrument. Junior high campers (grades 7-8) practice one and one-half hours per day on their major instrument.

Music Theory

All Csehy campers attend a forty five minute music theory class Monday through Thursday. Campers are placed into theory classes according to their background and experience. A brief placement test is administered to each camper on registration day. The results of the test help the faculty place campers into a class where they are challenged but not overwhelmed. Theory classes are offered for all levels of knowledge from beginning to advanced. Theory elective courses such as conducting, score reading, and church music may also be offered. A favorite Csehy pastime is to joke about theory classes, but almost every camper finds the lessons enjoyable and useful.

Large Ensembles

At the end of each week, Csehy campers demonstrate their week's work in a Saturday afternoon concert which features the Csehy Orchestra, Band , Choir, and Handbell Choir, as well as faculty soloists. All campers participate in the choir, and each camper must participate in at least one other large ensemble. Vocalists and pianists participate in the handbell choirs while instrumentalists perform in the orchestra and band. These large ensembles rehearse daily.
